We prefer using the h.264 codec for our content no matter the platform. It offers great quality in both SD and HD video and small file size.

We get asked what the best codec settings are for making h.264 videos. Scala recommends these settings:

The format should be H.264 MPEG4 Part 10, Main Profile, Main Level.

Resolution: up to 1920x1080
Max Bit rate: 10.5 mb
Frame rate: 24 frames per second progressive.
Field Order: Top frame

Compressor: AAC
Sample rate: 44.1 KHz stereo

The Main Concept H.264 CODEC (Release_5_1_Scala_VideoCODECs_update.exe) must be installed on your Designer or Player 5 systems.

The H.264 file can be added as a Designer Background or MovieClip, or Content Manager media item.

In practice, most of our signage content is 1360X768 or 768X1360 encoded at 30fps and 9mb/s CBR (or VBR) and it plays back wonderfully.
